How to Design a Stunning PC! ✨

In today's fast-paced digital world, having the right computer can make all the difference. Whether you're a hardcore gamer, a professional content creator, or simply someone who demands the best performance, a custom-built PC can be the perfect solution. That's where Lakes Custom Computers comes in: Australia's finest custom PC builders, dedicated to crafting gaming computers and workstations that exceed your expectations.

Identifying Your Needs

The first step in choosing the right custom-built PC is to identify your specific needs. Are you primarily interested in gaming, or do you require a powerful workstation for tasks like video editing, 3D modelling, or data analysis? Your usage scenario will dictate the components you'll need to optimise performance and ensure a seamless experience.

If gaming is your passion, you'll want to prioritise a CPU like the Intel Core i5 14600KF or the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, paired with a powerful graphics card that can handle the latest games at high settings. On the other hand, if you're a content creator or someone who works with resource-intensive applications, you may benefit more from a Ryzen 9 7900X or a similar CPU with a focus on multi-core performance.

Of course, your budget is also a crucial factor. Lakes Custom Computers offers a wide range of configurations to suit every budget, from entry-level gaming rigs to high-end workstations. By carefully considering your needs and your financial constraints, you can find the perfect balance between performance and value.

Understanding PC Components

To make an informed decision, it's essential to understand the key components that make up a custom-built PC. Let's take a closer look at some of the most important elements:

CPU (Central Processing Unit)

The CPU, or processor, is the heart of your computer, responsible for executing instructions and performing calculations. As mentioned earlier, the Intel Core i5 14600KF and the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X are both excellent choices, offering impressive performance for gaming and productivity tasks.

GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)

The GPU, or graphics card, is responsible for rendering graphics and handling visual processing. If you're a gamer, you'll want to invest in a high-end GPU that can deliver smooth, immersive gameplay. For more FPS, spend as much of your budget as you can on the GPU. For easy to run games such as Fortnite, Minecraft, Valorant, any of the lower tier graphics cards under $600 are perfect. For harder to run games such as Battlefield, COD etc, you’ll want something around $600 to $1500+ depending on how high you want to push up the in-game graphics. YouTube is the best place to find out what FPS you can get on a certain graphics card. (Remember to put your monitor resolution into the Youtube search, for example; "Fortnite RTX 3060 1080p")

RAM (Random Access Memory)

RAM is the memory that your computer uses to store and access data quickly. The more RAM you have, the better your system will perform, especially when running multiple applications or working with large files.

Required RAM for different lifestyles:

  • Office Computer: 8GB
  • Gaming or Productivity: 16GB to 32GB
  • 3D modeling, Rendering, Virtualization etc: 64GB to 128GB

Storage

The SSD (Solid State Drive) is super fast storage that your Operating System (Windows 10/11) lives on. Your favourite games/apps should be able to fit on your SSD too. This will help them load super fast. The HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is much slower storage, but is cheaper to add a lot of it. Good for storing games, photos, videos etc. A HDD is not required and can be added later, I usually recommend starting with a 500-1TB SSD (1TB = 1000GB). And no hard drive.

Power Supply

The power supply unit (PSU) is the component that provides the necessary power to your entire system. It's crucial to choose a high-quality PSU that can handle the power requirements of your custom-built PC. Our configurator will only let you choose the minimum power supply you require.

Cooling

Proper cooling is essential to ensure your custom-built PC runs smoothly and efficiently. Lakes Custom Computers offers a range of cooling solutions, from air-based systems to advanced liquid cooling setups, to keep your components running at optimal temperatures. For Intel builds that include an i3 to i5 processor, the stock coolers (Free option) are plenty to cool them down. However, once you move into the i7 and i9 CPU’s (Similarly, AMD Ryzen 7 and 9), you’ll need liquid cooling. The AIO’s (All-in-one, Liquid coolers) you can choose from range from 240mm to 360mm.

Fan Pack + LED’s + Cable Kit + Backplate

Fans keep your computer cool. They also drastically improve the look of a system. I recommend the Coolmoon 6 pack of RGB Fans, these are cheap and effective, they also come with a remote to change the colour and mode. For higher-end systems, I recommend the Lian Li Uni Fans as they are clean and come in black and white. LED Strips can be added to further light up the system, I only recommend LED’s if you don’t have RGB fans, as the fans provide plenty of light. Cable kits come in many colours and replace the main visible cables, great for colour theming your rig. The backplate covers the usually boring top-side of graphics cards, and adds some more RGB, however you are advertising for us, as our logo is on it, thank you in advance!

Networking

For gaming computers, I always recommend running an Ethernet cable, if you cannot, no stress, these custom rigs can come with WIFI. And it can do both 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ. So if you have NBN, it will take full advantage.

Bluetooth is an optional extra, however most gaming devices these days use a dongle that comes with the device.
